A 2018 consultant report indicates that a lone officer should confront active shooter(s) and not wait for backup (Kleinberg, 2018). I do not necessarily dispute that opinion; but my decades of experience as a LEO and firearms instructor tells me that in terms of ballistics; the typical police handgun is not a match for the often-seen active-shooter's assault rifle.
In fairness to the lone officer under attack, I encourage police agencies to arm LEO's with weapons equivalent to those being used by active shooters.
Citizens should try to get used to seeing more officers carrying AR-15's or an equivalent long gun.
