CSAM & Predators - Offender turns himself in: Part of a cycle of CSAM abuse?

Some (not all) CSAM offenders suffer with guilt that may manifest in a repeating cyclical pattern of abuse, regret, abuse and regret.  During the cycle they will offend, then experience regret & repent, then eventually re-offend, then regret & repent again as the cycle repeats. In some cases the offender eventually  self-reports to law enforcement or to some other authority.

The cycle is sometimes seen in offenders who collect images of child sexual abuse. The cycle may manifest like this:
  1. Offender finds and saves an unlawful image to digital media.
  2. Offender experiences self-gratification from the image.
  3. Offender regrets the conduct.
  4. Offender deletes the image.Offender cannot overcome the attraction to the image and repeats the conduct.
  5. Offender eventually self-reports to law enforcement or another authority.

Below is an example of an offender who, during his hours of regret, turned himself in.  According to the report, 53-year-old Daniel E. Clement of Omaha, Nebraska flagged down a uniform patrol officer and confessed saying, "I can't take it anymore, I have child porn in my apartment" (Ripa, 2014).

Another anecdote involves 52-year-old Arden Gellir of Louisville Kentucky. Gellir is reported to have called the Louisville Metro Police Department's Crimes Against Children Unit and admitted to possessing child pornography (WDRB, 2021).

The entire offense cycle is described in an informative presentation titled: The cycle of abuse and a clinical response by Marti Harris Fredericks and Margo Castenada.
